Big Bill Haywood and the Radical Union Movement. The career of Haywood is bound up with the stormy events which have marked the course of working-class development in America for 30 years and out of which the basic nucleus of the modern movement has come. He grew up in the hardship and struggle of the mining camps of the West. Gifted with the careless physical courage of a giant and an eloquence of speech, Bill soon became a recognized leader of the metal miners.

Haywood remained a frequent subject of front-page copy for the next decade and a half until he defected to the Soviet Union . Over 14 million journal, magazine, and newspaper articles.

Haywood remained a frequent subject of front-page copy for the next decade and a half until he defected to the Soviet Union and obscurity in 1921. Debs has been accorded the usual posthumous respectability, and was received at the White House even during his lifetime, but Haywood lived and died notorious, untrusted, and hated.
