The Church of England and social reform since 1854 ebook
by Donald O Wagner
The Church of England during the nineteenth century seemed to have an unhappy faculty for putting its worst foot forward. It is not the writer's purpose to rehabilitate the Church as an agency of reform.
The Church of England during the nineteenth century seemed to have an unhappy faculty for putting its worst foot forward. In theological matters it was most in the public eye when party strife was bitterest and recrimination most violent. From time to time it defended privileges that seem almost indefensible and resisted changes that were not only popular but inevitable. He desires merely to state its position with regard to some of the typical problems of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, whether that position happens to have been admirable or the reverse. The formal history of the Church of England is traditionally dated by the Church to the Gregorian mission to England by Saint Augustine of Canterbury in AD 597. As a result of Augustine's mission, and based on the tenets of Christianity, Christianity in England fell under control or authority of the Pope. This gave him the power to appoint bishops, preserve or change doctrine, and/or grant exceptions to standard doctrine.
Since 2005, the Church of England has allowed for the ordination of gay priests, under the condition that they remain celibate. Homosexuals in celibate civil unions were permitted to become bishops in 2013. Also, in 2013, the House of Commons passed legislation to legalize same-sex marriages but didn’t allow the Church of England to perform them. Many consider the Church of England’s elevation of women and gays in the clergy as groundbreaking and long-awaited progress. Others in the church view it as sacrilegious and blasphemous.
