John Meade Haines (June 29, 1924 – March 2, 2011) was an American poet and educator who had served as the poet laureate of Alaska. Haines was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He later moved to Washington, DC where he attended St. John's College High School, the National Art School, and American University. From 1950 to 1952 he studied at Hans Hoffman's School of Fine Arts in New York before moving to Alaska where he homesteaded from 1954 to 1969.

John Haynes Holmes (November 29, 1879 – April 3, 1964) was a prominent Unitarian minister, pacifist, and co-founder of the NAACP and the ACLU. He is noted for his anti-war activism. He was born in Philadelphia on November 29, 1879, a descendant of John Holmes of Colchester, Essex, a Messenger of the General Court of Plymouth Colony and the executioner of Thomas Granger. Newland H. Holmes, President of the Massachusetts Senate, was his cousin.
