Forget the movie by the same name. It doesn't hold a candle to the book, which is an excellent read. The story, though it takes place a few generations ago, is totally timeless. What kid hasn't looked for that adult who really understands and cares? For that matter, what adult hasn't looked for the same at some point?
A very good, short novelette that touches on profound issues of sexuality and coming of age. The movie fleshes out these issues much better than the book. Whereas the book portrays the protagonist dying in a far-off country and leaving his inheritance to the young boy, the movie pursues the issue of redemption of a man who may have offended in the past.
