The publisher chose to OCR the book, which would have been OK had anyone bothered to check it. Nobody did, and there are artifacts such as bad line breaks (quotation marks beginning or ending a line), amusing and annoying misprints--0 B K for Phi Beta Kappa, "Board o$ Visitors", Pa-gliacci', and so on--oddly narrow lines where I suppose a picture must have been, captions included though the photos are gone, "Section 1" through "Section n" rather than the essay titles heading chapters, and no doubt other problems I've forgotten. I'm no expert on copyright, but I don't see why someone shouldn't simply reproduce the page images. That would give a handsomer and more accurate book.

Though I dislike the production, I'm glad to have read the essays. The best of them are collected in _Unbought Mind_ (which Illinois has allowed to go out of print), but the essays on President Eliot and Charles Eliot Norton among others were new to me.
John Jay Chapman was sitting behind a row of 15 girls from a boarding-school when he saw a performance of "Fanny's First Play," which was written in a style of a hoyden, but it was written by Shaw. Chapman described it as a caricature, and it did not please Chapman, but he noticed the audience in which the girls devoured all this medley of twentieth-century confusion with eyes of rapturous interest. They took the play seriously as a very good joke. Chapman believes in far more loving kindness and decency. Shaw was a writer who brought out inner turmoil that makes life seem like the decline that could end in a surprising collapse because nobody is going to be responsible for how we end up. In the long run, the silent majority have been dead and gone before this kind of sinking caused panic, and distraction will continue to avoid any rampage that a real panic could produce.
