Psychiatrist Peter Breggin produced this groundbreaking critique in 1979 and it is still completely relevant today! Sadly ECT is still performed and there is movement to increasingly use this 'treatment' especially on the severely depressed or the elderly. ECT is also performed against the patient and family's wishes as an involuntary 'treatment'. For further and updated documentation on the damaging and destructive effects of ECT and why the practice should be banned, see Peter R. Breggin MD's recent book: Brain Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry (2008).

This man is a hero. In 1980, as a 19-year-old, I was given electroconvulsive "therapy" without effective anesthetic in a reputable private hospital. As Breggin points out, there are doctors who hire themselves out as "expert witnesses" who claim under oath that it would be impossible for the "patient" to remember such an experience. I believe those doctors should volunteer to undergo such treatment. I'd be happy to help, in fact. Peter Breggin has tried to do for victims of psychiatric foolishness what a good number of people have done for Vietnam veterans, and he deserves the serious attention of every responsible person.

Here is an honest Psychiatrist who has nothing financially to gain. He risks being outcasted from the psychiatric establishment and dared to speak the truth. I sincerely hope that this book saves some lives from the devastating and inhuman
electric lobotomy that is disguised as therapy for depression and other mental problems. Electricity is run through the brain tissue until it causes permanent brain damage, and temporally unconciousness. It give temporally relief to depression because
it knocks you out. Thereafter you have to live forever with your brain damage. The ECT establishment is corrupt. They keep instituting new ways to disguise this barbaric treatment. They now use anaesthesia, musle paralyzers. They focus on the right side of the brain. The side that control our most human qualities, and damages to the right side is harder to measure.
Peter Breggin MD is a hero. Wish there were more Doctors like him. Sadly, those who are in charge of ECT are the ones that bend the truth and make the money. They are given impressive credentials by the Establishment. This makes them dangerous indeed. I sincerely hope that this book saves a few lives from being devastated. It is really a book worth reading.
