It is difficult to pin point the source of Toriyama's artwork inspiration. He admires Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy and was impressed by Walt Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which he remembers for the great art.

His work seems taken from children's books rather than a gut-punching martial-arts tale, but incongruity is what makes his manga appealing.

Akira Toriyama (鳥山 明 Toriyama Akira) (born on April 5, 1955, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture) is a widely acclaimed Japanese manga artist and character designer who lives in Kiyosu. He is most famously known for his creation of Dr. Slump in 1980 and Dragon Ball in 1984. Akira Toriyama is a shy and reserved person who does not like interviews. His manga, including all of the 42 volumes of Dragon Ball, contain certain cover flap images that reference Toriyama's real life.

I loved the Dragon ball Z series and love how they put the manga's in this huge books. The company vizbig is putting a lot of manga content in this books. If you love a good read and haven't watch the dbz anime don't worry, reading it is as good.they also have the dragon ball series if you also haven't seen or read the begging of the story of Goku's adventure with his friends, they have them too.

I just read this one again in preparation for what I hope to be a full read of the Dragon Ball manga (all 42 volumes covering the Dragon Ball story as well as Dragon Ball Z) and it's just damn good fun. Dragon Ball is one of those universes like Star Wars, or LotR, that I just wanted to ditch my own life for and be a part of growing up. It's just a fun world. There are dinosaurs, but there are also futuristic capsules that pop out full size houses and motor bikes. There are flying clouds (that you may ride as long as you're pure of heart). There are staffs that can grow to a distance equal to the moon at Goku's whim. There are martial artists who can focus their dormant energy into a physical energy blast obliterating mountains. There are alien species that transform into giant monkey-monsters at the sight of a full moon. And that's just the first two volumes!

Call it nostalgia but I love Dragon Ball, and if you can get your hands on the series I think you will too.

I hava read the original manga, and this one thought still censored to some extent, its not as much, and the color makes everything look gorgeous, this is what Kai was trying to be in terms of pacing, this IS the definitive way to own the series!

This is another high quality release of the Dragonball Z manga in a format we haven't gotten before in the United States. Of course, this a refreshing change from the variety of repackaged editions marketed as "unedited" by Viz in an attempt to get us to reach into our wallets. Understandably, some of you are probably hesitant to buy this edition for a variety of reasons. However, I should let you know that those concerns are, for the most part, unfounded.

Having just received this in the mail today, it's true that I haven't examined every panel with a magnifying glass to identify every minuscule imperfection. Were I do to so, I doubt I would find any regardless. The presentation of this release is great, and the colors are stunning. No matter how many times you've read the manga in its original form, you'll feel like a kid experiencing it for the first time.

I highly recommend this volume and the one before it as an addition to your manga library. These releases are of the utmost quality and deserve high praise for the crisp coloring and (mostly) true translation from the original source.

Damaged. The box was damaged and so are the Volumes. They have stains on some pages look like coffee stains to be exact. I understand this is used however at that requesting price with damages like this, no not worth all the money. I truly Enjoy Akira Toriyama DBZ series but this used collection was also missing the poster inside. I mainly wanted the Volumes over everything else which I indeed got but lower the price when it substains damages such as tears and stains.

Wow, it was much better than I expected!

Me and my girlfriend are fans of Dragonball Z, and were looking for the Dragonball Manga collection to collect. After some research (so you don't have to do it!) we found this one to be the best, and it delivered! Much bigger than I expected and the pages are thick enough and the art is high quality as well. It has a bendable cover but sturdy for sure, not flimsy.

There's in total FIVE parts to this series, each containing 3 issues. Which is PERFECT in my opinion - doesn't take as much space. If you're looking to collect the mangas than this one is 100% the right start with - other issues tend to be smaller and more flimsy. Price (11-15 dollars) is excellent as well and worth it.

The first volume of Dragon Ball Z -- 17th volume of the Dragon Ball series -- starts with a bang, and with Toriyama immediately expanding his world. With the introduction of his brother Raditz, we discover that Goku is, in fact, an alien; which explains his other-worldly strength (not to mention his tail, previously). Goku is part of the Saiyan race, from Planet Vegeta. A race of martial warriors who find suitable planets for life, and sell them to other extraterrestrials, right after wiping the planet clean of any life forms currently living on it. Earth was to be Goku's first assignment as a Saiyan child, but a childhood injury causing amnesia prevented this grisly fate.

For those without any prior knowledge of the show, this is obviously where things really pick up. The scope of the series is expanded from here on out, and oh is it fun.
