Mario Sironi (1885-1961) was born in Sardinia but was brought up in Rome, where in 1903 he attended the Scuola Libera del Nudo at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Sironi served in the First World War alongside his fellow Futurists . Marinetti and Luigi Russolo. At the Estorick Collection, 39a Canonbury Square, London N1, until 9 June Mario Sironi presents today's audience with the same problems of response as Luigi Moretti (see opposite), for in the 1930s he was one of Mussolini's most vigorous supporters, supplying monumental murals to exalt the Fascist state. But the works on paper now at the Estorick date from a decade or more earlier, and have no didactic or triumphalist agenda, writes Andrew Mead. The Estorick Collection was founded by American sociologist and writer Eric Estorick (1913–93), who began to collect art when he moved to England after the Second World War. Estorick and his German-born English wife Salome (1920–1989) discovered Umberto Boccioni’s book Futurist Painting and Sculpture (1914) while they were on their honeymoon in 1947. Before the end of their trip they visited erstwhile Futurist Mario Sironi in Milan and bought most of the contents of his studio, including hundreds of drawings.

Mario Sironi was an Italian painter sculptor and illustrator who represented the Novecento Italiano art movement and Futurism. He created his often dark-coloured paintings with giant and motionless forms in a metaphysical art style. Mario Sironi created his early paintings among which were the portraits of himself and of his family in the Divisionist style influenced by the tutelage of Giacomo Balla. From 1913, the artist shifted to the newly appeared Futurism which he had used for some time. The first exhibition at which the artist took part along with the Futurists was organized in 1914 at the Galleria Sprovieri in Rome.
