The Decisive Duel book. In this remarkable new book, David Isby looks at the clash between these two fighter planes, lasting from pre-war development to decisive combat. London, 15 September 1940  . The Decisive Duel tells the stories of these iconic, classic aircraft and also the people who created them: Willy Messerschmitt, the German designer with a love for gliders and admiration for Hitler; RJ Mitchell, his brilliant British counterpart, who struggled against illness to complete the design of the Spitfire.

by David Isby (Author). The epic struggle between the Spitfire and the Messerschmitt 109 upon which so much of western civilization depended in the summer of 1940 has found the ideal biographer in David Isby. I write "biographer" because, like the men who flew these remarkable fighter planes, Isby sees them in almost human terms, transcending the mere mechanical. LONDON, 15 SEPTEMBER 1940

LONDON, 15 SEPTEMBER 1940  . The air battle over Britain shaped the course of the entire war. Among the clouds that day, two of the most advanced fighter planes, the British Supermarine Spitfire and the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, battled for supremacy of the skies.

I erroneously believed that the book was going to be primarily about the side-by-side development of the two fighters. Although it's a decent read, I was disappointed with the lack of real meat regarding the ongoing improvements made by both the Brits and Germans on the aircraft(s) to one-up each other as the war went on. The majority of the read is a WW2 account of air combat between the two as the war progressed, interspersed from time to time with a some tidbits of the technical stuff. If air fighting narratives are what one wants, there are plenty of better stories of encounters between 109s and Spitfires out there.
For example, there was a enormous gap in the book between the introduction and operations of the 109F and when the Germans finally trotted out the G versions. I grew a bit tired of reading a war history when what I really wanted was the 'technical' story of their development.
In its defense, I have yet to stumble across anything in a single volume that compares the development of the two as well as this one. I dare say you'd have to dig out individual reference journals of either aircraft to gain any better insight.

I cannot agree with my fellow reviewers any more. This is an excellent book, that describes the institutional histories, and the implications made by choices of the countries involved. It covers history from the pre-war era to the war, and even post-war. As institutional histories and histories of aircraft goes, this is an excellent book from a proven historian.

I am only about a 150 pages into this book so I won't write a full review quite yet. I do however want to comment on the physical book and its delivery.

I normally prefer to read most books on Kindle. The reading experience is excellent and the delivery is virtually instantaneous. But this book also had some used book options. So I ordered it.

In about three weeks I got a perfectly new appearing $35.00 500 page book for less than a dollar. You can't beat that.

UPDATE

I have now finished this book. Even if I had full price for this book I would still give it five stars. It is a wonderful story of the Second World War seen though the device of following two airplanes. It's boffo!

I have read a lot of histories of WWII - a fact of which I'm a little embarrassed. I have hardly ever read a book on Korea or Viet Nam. And like most Americans I am nearly totally ignorant of the Clinton era war in Bosnia. I don't know why that is but there it is. I do read a lot of military technology books too. Although probably more tank books than plane books. In any case I have read several dozen books over the years on the topics of this book. This is one of the very best books on these subjects that I have ever read. Period.

It is not really just a matching set of technical specifications - although there are a good number of technical tidbits. There is a lot of the back story on British manufacturing processes and Nazi interdepartmental politics. WWII was a clash of civilizations not just simple fighting by men and machines. The Nazis were very bad at government. The British and we Americans just organized ourselves better. That's ultimately why all those Bf 109s got shot down.

I'm dying to relate some of the wonderful anecdotes and technical tidbits in this volume - but I won't. You'll have to trust me. Buy the book. I think I paid 17 cents for mine.

BTW I have started examining more used books on Amazon. I just ordered a book on China by Vaclav Smil. I think it cost only 9 cents.

What a book! I was very surprised about its amount of knowledge and how excitingly it is presented, like I was in the middle of happenings. There cannot be a better book about this matter!

Excellent read on this subject. Although Spitfire history is covered many places, this book gave new insight into Willy Messerschmitt and the 109.

A most detailed and comprehensive valuation between the two airplanes - a must for every fighter aircraft buff.
The same time: A good story...
