Tuna and the billfish - swordfish, marlin and sailfish - wander throughout the tropical and temperate oceans of the world. They are, as the book's subtitle aptly puts it, ''fish without a country. This phrase was used to describe the tuna by an 18th-century Spanish cleric, Fray Martin Sarmiento, in a report to the Duke of Medina Sidonia. Tagged northern bluefin tuna have traveled across the Atlantic - in a straight line, 4,830 miles - in 119 days, thus averaging over 40 miles a day. Marlin and sailfish make journeys of similar length.
