Edgar Poe quarreled with John Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. He had an elder brother named William Henry Leonard Poe and a younger sister named Rosalie Poe. Their grandfather David Poe Sr. emigrated from County Cavan, Ireland around 1750. Edgar may have been named after a character in William Shakespeare's King Lear which the couple were performing in 1809.

He then was a resident of Richmond and a regular contributorto the Southern Literary Messenger. It was not until a year later thatthe bride and her widowed mother followed him thither. Poe’s devotion to his child-wife was one of the most beautiful featuresof his life. Many of his famous poetic productions were inspired by herbeauty and charm. Consumption had marked her for its victim, and theconstant efforts of husband and mother were to secure for her all thecomfort and happiness their slender means permitted.
Gerhard Lohrenz was born on 13 December 1899 in the village of Neu-Schönsee in the Zagradovka colony in Ukraine. After completing elementary school and some classes in the colony's Zentralschule, he graduated from the Business School (Handelsschule) in Alexanderkrone, Molotschna colony, in 1918. From 1918 to 1922 Lohrenz served first in the White Army as a volunteer in the Red Cross, and then in the Red Army as a conscript
