Rosie Thomas, a "master storyteller" (Cosmopolitan) has been delighting readers with her globe-spanning romantic sagas for more than three decades. Here, in Iris and Ruby, she has written her most touching story yet, set in the haunting and seductive vistas of Egypt.

The unexpected arrival of her willful teenage granddaughter, Ruby, brings life and disorder to 82-year-old Iris Black's old house in Cairo. Ruby, driven by her fraught relationship with her own mother to run away from England, is seeking refuge with the grandmother she hasn't seen for years.

An unlikely bond develops between them, as Ruby helps Iris to record her fading memories of the glittering, cosmopolitan Cairo of World War II, and of her one true love--the enigmatic Captain Xan Molyneux--whom she lost to the ravages of conflict.

This long-ago love has shaped Iris's life, and, as becomes increasingly apparent, those of her daughter and her granddaughter. And it is to affect them all, again, in ways they could not have imagined.

This was a beautiful book, a story of an elderly Grandmother and her very young Granddaughter. Both a bit wary of each other at the beginning but as time went on they each taught each other something and despite the age gap the bond between them grows. It is set in India and I found it hard to put down, read and enjoy.

It was hard to get into but my friend had read it and told me not to give up. I am so glad I didn't. I really enjoyed this book and learned so much about Cairo

Such wonderful true descriptions of Cairo that I almost felt like I had returned there again.
Great characters with depth in their personalities.

I do think Rosie Thomas provides a lot of historical, particulary wartime, data in her novels however after The Kashmir Shawl found this a little contrived; The fact that Ruby could "meet someone" as part of her taxi trip was as if they had to find a connection for her to love the area other than her grandmother and the story regarding the desert trip was again a little hard to believe. Having said that, I admire the way the city itself and the people are described in such detail and the WW2 connection is very interesting. I wonder why both books involve grandmother/granddaughter connections??? The ending was also a little sudden leaving a lot regarding the future to the imagination.

I really enjoyed this book as I love the way Rose Thomas writes. To me this book portrays the importance of children knowing extended family. How the young can keep the old interested in life and how the aged can offer that 'safe haven" for the young to develop and grow. To find themselves without the pressure or judgement of parents. I also loved the references to Cairo having visited this fascinating city. An exciting place.
Rosie Thomas turned out another wonderful story.

this one not to be missed, have to admit to shedding a few tears.
Just love this Ladies Stories. Another Author who has lived for a time in the Country she writes about and does plenty of research.
