A surprisingly readable history book. It is used as a textbook for students in the University of Chicago's History of Western Civilization overview class. The author writes in clear and jargon-free prose and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Western history. I read this simply for my own learning and it turned out to be an enjoyable read as well.
