San Jacinto, Rick was hired by the National Park Service as a seasonal backcountry ranger in Kings Canyon National Park. He now patrols alpine regions three-days-hike from the nearest road, thriving on the emotions evoked by crystalline skies and pristine wilderness. Rick Sanger was nine when he first rode the Palm Springs Tram with his father. He later returned as a Boy Scout - and even hiked to the summit - but it was years before he would realize the effect this beautiful mountain would have on his life and spirit. Rick eventually took a job working with the rangers at the Long Valley Ranger Station, near the top of the tram.

San Jacinto Ridge is enjoyed in either direction. A 3,000 foot elevation change over 10 miles makes for a very pleasant drive. A 2wd high clearance vehicle would be adequate unless a storm is brewing. I wouldn't consider the Indian Mountain Trail detour without a proper 4wd vehicle. We were going to stop for a while where a creek crossed the trail, but, there were about a dozen other rigs stopped there already. So, we continued on to Yellow Post campsite and stopped there. There was no one there so we had the place to ourselves and had plenty of room for parking off the trail.
