I have to agree wholeheartedly with the review. We came upon the book purely by accident in a used book store. My wife's mother spent many years in Indonesia before the war, and returned to Holland where she began raising her family. After emigrating to Canada, her Indonesian experiences influenced her family's tastes, and I have been the lucky recipient of her tastes by after marrying her daughter. We have tried many of the recipes in the book, and have found them all to be both authentic and super tasty. Some of the ingredients were once hard to obtain in Canada, but the more recent influx of South Asian Canadians has resulted in many of the more obscure spices becoming much more available. I am surprised that book is still available. Our copy is well used, dog-eared and well annotated.
Bought my little book in 1980. It is my most used cook book. Have been looking high and low to give my kids, now grown up, their own copies. Finally found one second hand. Why is this book no longer in print? Desperately seeking more copies.
There is a lot of Indonesian cooking in my Dutch/Indonesian family. The food cooked from this book is wonderful. I'm asked by my mother to contribute food to family gatherings and that by itself is highest recommendation for this cook book.
I purchased this book when I lived in Indonesia in the 1970's. We had a wonderful cook who prepared many of the recipes, and I did not want to leave the country without the ability to create these dishes on my own. A few of the dishes contained herein have become family favorites for parties, etc., and I am still trying new recipes from the book. Foods are a wonderful way of connecting with culture, and I am instantly transported back to Indonesia each time I prepare something from this book. I do wish it was still in print, as it would be a fantastic gift to pass along to people who love Asian dishes.
