Boulez: Composer, Conductor, Enigma Hardcover – November, 1976. The book is quixotic in that Peyser is attempting to tell the life story and background of one of the most enigmatic and secretive artists of the 20th century. After reading the book, you almost feel as if it's literally impossible to write a biography of Boulez. Page after page we are told of Boulez's refusal to reveal himself, and Peyser leaves it at that.
My reading this bk isn't exactly completely strange but doing so illustrates how I come to do things sometimes. Pierre Boulez is on that list. The book covers Boulez' early revolutionary years in Paris, his time in Darmstadt and the ascendancy of Stockhausen, his "retreat" into conducting, and his tentative return to composition. Peyser's book isn't a Saw this at a used bookstore shortly after Boulez' passing and picked it up.
Recounts the life of the eminent, often controversial composer-conductor from his early years, through his postwar years as an avante-garde composer and theorist, to his conducting engagement with the New York Philharmonic.

As a child Pierre Boulez began piano lessons and demonstrated aptitude in both music and mathematics. He pursued the latter at Lyon before pursuing music at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen and the wife of Arthur Honegger, Andrée Vaurabourg.
