Jump In (2-volume set) ebook

by Sharon Watson

''Writing may send warm shivers of pleasure up your spine. Or it may make you feel as though you are drowning in an angry, choppy, icy sea with nothing in sight but hungry, toothy sharks and storm clouds spitting out hail stones as big as golf balls.'' So begins this wonderful composition course by author Sharon Watson. Intended as a course for students in grades 5 to 8, Jump In can also be used by high school students who have had little practice in writing or who are reluctant writers. Jump In overcomes the reluctant student's fear of writing with a friendly, approachable style; short, workable exercises; and non-threatening word counts for longer assignments. Students will learn how to write persuasive papers, expository essays, descriptions, narration, and poetry. The easy-to-use parent/teacher section includes what to look for in an assignment, how to assign a grade, how to help the student proofread, and a one-year writing program with daily writing prompts designed to maintain fun and interest for the student. This two-volume set includes an illustrated student workbook and a teacher's manual.
Wow! I love this book. A friend recommended it to me in order to teach my daughter how to write. I'm learning so much while we're doing this together. The author knows how to teach. This is now one of my daughter's favorite subjects and it used to be her least favorite.
Excellent product to help develop writing skills in a student who hated to write. Lays it out step by step and makes the thought process behind writing a clear, concise paragraph more manageable.
I am a homeschooling mom, intimidated with teaching writing. So I was quick to pick up a book that made writing fun instead of boring and rigid. I have spent the last 2 years using this book. I threw out our "traditional" writing program from a well known publisher. In fact, I have pitched using them even with my 4th grader! We now learn to write using Jump In's approach. It inspires children to write without being afraid they will fail and get it all wrong. The author really does encourage writers in a creative way. An example would be: My 8th grader recently read a book she could not stand. Instead of the typical book report format, she used Jump In to guide her through writing a report card for the book, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Currently, I do not have the time to spend with her on writing, so I am using The Lifeguard's Locker, which has some quick, daily writing ideas that keep her going. I love the teachers help in the grading section of The Lifeguards Locker also. I had no idea how to grade and it is hard to be objective when grading your own child. This gave me steps to grade by, which reduced my time and stress. I absolutely love these books and am sure you will too. Ages recommended are junior high/early high school. But, as I stated, I am now using it slowly with my reluctant-to-write-anything, 4th grader.
