Masterton writes with a richness, almost opulence, of texture in Lady of Fortune. He describes the extremes of society, from decadent wealth to grinding poverty, with a delicate touch that in no way diminishes the impact.

His sentences are beautifully constructed, and simply beautiful. ...'cotton dresses which had long forgotten their colour.'

His characters are larger than life and inveigled me into their lives, so that I saw and heard, smelled and tasted what they did. It was something of a shock, at the end of the book, to come back to the 21st century.

This sweeping family saga and social commentary is a classic, exquisitely written, a symphony of words.

Graham Masterton is obviously a talented writer and initially I thought I would enjoy what looked to be a sweeping saga. However, after I had invested a good bit of time reading, Masterton began to include some exceptionally graphic, and seemingly gratuitous, sex scenes. Now I'm no prude, and sex can even play an important part in some novels, but when it seems to be thrown in just for titilation, then I'll stop right there and read no further. That's what happened with Lady of Fortune. While I can't rate the book based on its entirety, I will reluctantly rate it based on my non-enjoyment and the fact that I did not finish it.

"Lady of Fortune" is the spectacular tale of Effie Watson, the beautiful daughter of a Victorian banker, who rises above the restrictions of her era to become one of the richest women of the century. Tough, unconventional, and compassionate, she masterminds a banking empire the likes of which the world has never seen. Effie is friend and adviser to world leaders, movie stars, royalty, and celebrated artists and writers, but her staggering wealth and social position do not ensure her happiness. Her tragedies and triumphs unfold against the backdrop of several tumultuous decades-from Victorian England to World War I, through the Jazz Age, Prohibition, the Crash of 1929, the advent of Nazism and beyond.
Opilar
Interesting from a historical point of view, but couldn't like Effie, the main character.
