Here's a brief overview of commonly delineated periods in English literature, with author and title examples for each, from 450 to the present. Although historians have delineated the eras of British literature in different ways over time, common divisions are outlined below. The era extends to around 1500. As with the Old English period, much of the Middle English writings were religious in nature; however, from about 1350 onward, secular literature began to rise.
