This little book covers every book problem I've encountered, excepts for mouse bites on page edges. But at that point, unless it's incredibly rare or in high demand, I draw the line at mouse bites. In any case, it lists all the equipment you'll need most of which you can get from Gaylord or other library, shipping and packaging sources.

He is commonly known by his nom de plume, R. L. Shep. Shep is known primarily for his books on textile arts - costume and period etiquette - which are either reprints of 19th century monographies or compilations of primary sources. Robert Shep was born in Los Angeles, California to Ruth and Milton Shep; his four grandparents were Jews who emigrated to the United States from czarist Russia.

Listen to books in audio format. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. 2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact.

Tips To Care For Books. Store books in a dry location. A lot of our books have been sitting for years and can use a good hand-cleaning. Humidity breeds bugs and mildew, so don’t store books in a basement or attic. While that old book smell is charming, it can also be a health hazard. Direct sunlight fades book covers and can destroy leather bindings. Storing books too tightly together warps their covers. If we take care of them properly by properly treating the brass and caring for the books frequently, I’m sure that we can keep them in excellent condition.

When I restarted my online selling of used and rare books, I started searching Amazon for books on caring for books. Eventually I found this one. It clearly delineates the skill level for each repair and then how you do it (lots of pictures). As I remember, it also provides a list of places from which you can purchase various supplies. Also, no matter what else you get, be sure to get white cotton gloves and a "document cleaner" from Gaylord that is brilliant at removing oily fingerprints from glossy dust jackets.

My current favorite sources (assume a dot com afer each name)
Gaylord: primarily a library materials source, they have anything and everything related to caring for books.
ULine: A long-term standard for packaging and shipping materials.

BTW, for packing and shipping I use COHESIVE CARDBOARD rolls. These are the ones with adhesive on one side. So now you'll know what to call them. (We were more or less shut down for a few years, and it took hours of searching to find the right name again. I also put the cohesive-cardboard wrapped books into clear vinyl bags that are then heat-sealed (for which you'll need a heat-sealer, not cheap). A number of clients have praised our packaging, so it must be working. The tricky part is always protecting the corners, so I usually turn the cardboard up or down to protect the corners.

There are other, more elaborate books that get down into the actual binding of books, but this one should cover 99% of your problems. If the solution isn't in this book, you will need to find a bindery, usually you'll find them close to a college or university.

So, have fun caring or repairing books. It's a wonderful sensation to be able to offer a perfectly cleaned up book for yourself or your clients.
