I first sought out this book because it was referenced in another book on home schooling. After I got it from the library, it took less than an hour to know that I needed to purchase this product for my own library.

I had not been able to find an adequate social studies curriculum for my 1st grader, so I decided to piece something together based on national and state standards. I wanted to use children's literature as a basis and add appropriate activities. This book does all of that for me, and more.

The book is divided into sections starting with "Self" and then moving on to "Family," "Community," etc., all the way to "World." Within each section there are lesson plans, each centered around a specific children's book. It gives ideas for discussion and teaching using the book. At the end of each lesson plan, numerous activity ideas are given. They include activities that will appeal to various ages, abilities and teaching styles. It indicates that it is for K-6, but there are many ideas appropriate for junior high and even high school age kids. And there is an added bonus--there are many suggestions on how to integrate social studies with all of the other disciplines. As an example, there is a whole page with activity ideas in each discipline relating to a study of firemen and firehouses.

I think that this book should be in every home school library.

As I looked through the limited viewing on Amazon, I thought that this book was similar to what I was looking for. As I got it, I realized that it really didn't focus on what I thought it was. I was looking for more book titles of Social Studies books that had a lesson plan to go with it. It was disappointing to know that what I bought was not exactly what I wanted.

I checked this book out at the library and knew I wanted a copy for my own library. It's just what I was looking for, a different approach to learning that I think Anthony has captured with this book. I took a children's literature class in college and wondered why they don't teach social studies using children's literature in the lower grades? It is so much more engaging and there are so many great authors Karen Cushman and Pam Munzo Ryan just to name two. I look forward to using the suggestions in this Children's Literature book with my own children.

Love this book! The suggested readings and the coinciding activities are wonderful and easily tailored to different age groups. We used this book in our homeschooling curriculum and plan to continue to use it once the children return to public school next year for supplemental learning. The discussion questions that are given for each book are very thought-provoking and really do engage you in a discussion. I would recommend this book highly.
