In 1988, Dorothy wrote the novel: " Gommie - the Girl Who Married the Butler: A Novella of 19th Century Australia 1858 - 1893 ", which was loosely based on the life of her great grandmother, Ellen (Lay) Spooner, and covering Ellen's elopement and her early years in Australia. titled "Connexions of a Lady," was published in 1991. Dorothy also wrote an autobiographical novel, "Slave By Marriage" During her lifetime, Dorothy used the names: Dorothy Ellen Michell; Dorothy Ellen Svenson; D. Michell; and Doro.
