Fielding Dawson (August 2, 1930 – January 5, 2002) was a Beat-era author of short stories and novels, and a student at Black Mountain College. He was also a painter and collagist whose works were seen in several books of poetry and many literary magazines. Born in New York City, Dawson was known for his ess style.

The pioneers of the novel were Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, and Sterne. The work of this foursome is of monumental significance, particularly because they were not only our first novelists but some of our best. No doubt the seeds of the novel were already there in the English literary soil but they burgeoned only with the arrival of these masters. Mr Dawson started his career in civil engineering as a Technician with major civil engineering contractors. Since joining the University of Nottingham he has been retained as an expert consultant on several road materials projects. After university study he spent 5 years with civil engineering consultants on a wide variety of geotechnical work as a geotechnical, then senior geotechnical engineer. He is responsible for undergraduate teaching in geomechanics, including courses on geo-environmental engineering and geology.
