The SportSpectator Field Hockey Guide gives the rules and some of the many penalties, but is designed ad a marketing tool - it has 2 spaces for inserting business cards, a large use of space in a very brief fold-out.

It gave me the basic information that I needed to follow along during my daughters JV HS team. Wish there was another one that took it from here and gave the more detailed information.

as a parent of a new high schooler who is looking forward to getting into a new sport. I bought this for myself so I can go the game and not have to ask those around me what's going on. Looks like it should do the trick

This is not a book, just a laminated, folding pamphlet. The title does indicate it is a "Basic" guide, but being new to field hockey, I assumed it would still be helpful. What a joke. The basic information includes such facts as (1) The players wear uniforms and use a stick and ball (2) The object of the game is to score goals and the team that scores the most goals wins and (3) the refs make calls. It has a section titled "Common referee signals", but does not illustrate the signals nor describe them! Don't waste your time on this next to useless "book".

I bought this for my mother, who comes to watch all my games. I was a little disappointed because it isn't as substantive as it looks on Amazon. It does still have a clear lay out of the field and basic information.

This guide cuts to the chase--just the basics. After I absorbed the information, I went to the SportSpectator website and continued to learn. I was quickly informed about a sport I knew nothing about and have always been curious since I first saw matches played on the East Coast. I continue to be impressed by the SportsSpectator guides!
