The role of the media and the new information and communication technologies has become a central part of the social, political, economic and cultural environment.

In a globalized world, where physical boundaries have been overtaken by technology and the flow of goods and cultural products, citizens receive information, analysis, advertising information, entertainment and visions of the reality coming for all over the world. This phenomenon generates unexplored processes and radical transformations of values and identities.

Confronted with these processes of globalization and homogenization, however, there have emerged local responses that oppose and defend the diversity, specificity and creative processes of hybridization of specific territories. Those voices propose the redesign of the global influences aiming for the preservation of the rich differences they represent in the form of traditional manifestations of each social group.

In this book, several of the most renowned scholars and experts in the field of communication, who participated in the event Dialogues of the Universal Forum of Cultures 2007 Monterey, contribute with their texts on the field as a goal to further discussion, analysis and exchange of opinions and views on these social transformations and on the positive or negative role played by them in the cultural products like movies, television, print, radio and information technology and general communication.
