History School No School. Preface v Preface I n one sense, human societies are like individual human beings: Individuals are influenced by their environments and by events which happen in their lives.

History School No School. But while it is often possible to perceive and even to predict the effects of these factors, individuals who are subject to identical environmental and historical s, for ex- ample-often end up with completely different personalities. And so it is with societies. Effects of some environmental factors are fairly obvious to see. The book contains very little information that would not be included in the most rudimentary course on Japan. And so much of the content is already starting to read as dated, even though.

After struggling mightily to understand Japanese history from such respected works as the Great Courses audiobooks which are delivered by professors in the field of history, I realized that I could absorb the information only if I, myself, was already a scholar of Japanese history. Reading this book, Japanese Society and History, in tandem with Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler (a history of a Japanese Inn that exists today but with fictionalized meetings of true historical characters who stopped there) has made me feel well prepared to appreciate Japanese history and culture in my upcoming visit to Japan. I do not find this book to be either ethnocentric or "liberal" as two previous reviewers labelled it. I am sorry they may scare readers off of this fine work. I find it to be an incredibly informative work with wonderful information regarding the formation and progression of Japanese history, society and culture. I think readers will truly benefit from this work and I highly recommend it to anyone trying to foster an appreciation of the country previous to travel there.

Today's victim: Japanese Society and History by John McKinstry (Author), Harold Kerbo (Author)

McKinstry and Kerbo pen an extremely brief and basic overview of Japanese history and culture in "Japanese Society and History". It's the sort of thing you could probably glean from the history channel, youtube, and a few online interviews. Or a lengthy date with a hot yet erudite Japanese girl. The book contains very little information that would not be included in the most rudimentary course on Japan. And so much of the content is already starting to read as dated, even though it's a relatively recent publication.

The authors are admitted modern liberals (Flying Spaghetti Marxists), which is relayed during a very odd and totally out of place commentary on MacArthur and his relationship with leftist union groups in Japan. I also found the authors epitomize a very stereotypical "Eurocentric" view of Japan (something "Liberals" often complain about). The author's arguments in this section presuppose that the "progressive" viewpoint is the only ethical foundation for any political system. In other words, people on the left are correct. Those to the right of Marcuse, well, they're slightly off-balance or worse.
