A History of Russia is one of the best, if not the best, one-volume texts of Russian history from Kievan times to the present. It does an exceptionally effective job of synthesizing a basic (yet always interesting and stimulating) narrative of Russian/Eurasian history with an introduction to historiographical debates about the major scholarly issues, showing how scholarship on certain issues has evolved over time. Generations of students have profited remarkably from this book.

Now completely revised in this eighth edition, A History of Russia covers the entire span of the country's history, from ancient times to the post-communist present. Keeping with the hallmark of the text, Riasanovsky and Steinberg examine all aspects of Russia's history--political, international, military, economic, social, and cultural--with a commitment to objectivity, fairness, and balance, and to reflecting recent research and new trends in scholarly interpretation. New chapters on politics, society, and culture since 1991 explore Russia's complex experience after communism and discuss its chances of becoming a more stable and prosperous country in the future.Widely acclaimed as the best one-volume history available, A History of Russia is also available in two split volumes--the first covers early Russia through the nineteenth century and the second ranges from 1855 to the present. Volume II features an additional introductory chapter that links Russia's modern history to the events that preceded it.

Riasanovsky is concise, and every sentence is packed with meaning. It's a fairly dense book, so don't expect to skim through it. He is somewhat of a revisionist, and considers many alternative theories of important Russian events, like the Mongol invasion, and the reign of Ivan the Terrible. The separation of chapters about political history from those focusing on economics & institutions, and those on religion & culture created a well-balanced perspective on important periods in medieval Russian history. If you want a comprehensive history of Russia, this is a great place to start.

A nice book to have in your Russian history collection to rehash the basic and major events, peoples and places of Russian History to be read in between your readings of more specialized histories of Russia.

This book gives an excellent overview of Russia's history and does not go overboard on details that are only of interest to scientists and historians. Excellent read. I used it in my Russian class, with my Proficiency students.

bought this book as a school text and figured I'd hate every minute of it - but the author managed to make Russian hsitory come alive on the pages. I would recommend for anyone with even a moderate interest in Russian philosophy / history.
