This was actually was novelized from a 1904 play produced by Belasco, but written by Klein. The play was an Broadway greatest hit(the longest running ever & with continuous sold out houses), with many revivals and numerous companies touring with it simultaneously. The story is about a successful father who, when his wife "elopes" kidnapping their daughter, drops everything to devote his life to finding his little girl. Exploited by detectives, he goes broke, but finally finds his now adult daughter by accident (sounds contemporary, no?)
While not a "literary" novel, it is a perfectly readable popular novel. To understand just how popular "The Music Master" was (as play and novel) we only have to ponder the fact that in the role's creator was offered an astonishing $1 million (in 1926!) to come out of retirement to play the hero in the movie version (he declined yet the movie was made with another actor and released in 1927 (no longer extant)).
Should be required reading for FATHERHOOD STUDIES.
