This is an excellent introduction to the history, politics and culture of Taiwan featuring relationships with mainland China and the USA as well as the rest of the world. The book captures the national ambivalence on unification with China. Most Taiwanese are satisfied with the status consisting quo of de facto separation. Politically, there was a transition from autocracy to democracy after the death of Chiang Kai-shek in 1975.
The book contains an informative account of business development including plastics and semiconductors based largely on promotion of hard science in Taiwan's education system. As with many flourishing economies, Taiwan is burdened with a low birth rate. The PRC is dependent on Taiwan as a reliable source of goods and labor finance. Outsourcing has been a prime ingredient in the economic growth of Taiwan. Riggen remarks on China's “white hot” economic growth eclipsing that of Taiwan. While that has since been proven a mirage, it won't change much in the political status of Taiwan. The book concludes with “Taiwan worked!” and they did it themselves.
The capsule history goes back to settling by Austronesian aborigines in the Neolithic era. As in other venues the Dutch encouraged inter ethnic conflict between Austronesian and Chinese Hokkien culture and language. 1620's pirate warlords Zheng Zhilong and Zheng Chinggon attempted to forestall the transition from Ming to Qin dynasties. The 1895 Treaty of Shimoseki ceded Taiwan, or Formosa, to Japan which held it as a colony until 1945. In 1949 it became refuge for beaten KMT army under Chiang with national identity only a vague concept. After Chiang Ching-kuo died in 1988, his successor, President Lee Teng-hui, continued to democratize the government. In 1972 the US Nixon administration recognized the PRC and dropped formal ties with the ROC while continuing military support. In 1978 Carter and Deng normalized relations with the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA). Little has changed since then.
The book contains an interesting account of KMT and DPP politics, dissidents and elections. It was written too early to see the 2015 Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou visit China's President Xi Jinping in Singapore meeting since the split in 1949. Today Taiwan lacks international recognition being excluded from the UN. Rationale has shifted since the end of the cold war with a new consensus signifying a strategy of ambiguity. Political movement has been directed toward immunizing citizens against blandishments of the PRC.
I appreciate a writer who is this good at transmitting extensive political and cultural knowledge without a great deal of bias. This is the reference to use for anyone interested in understanding modern Taiwan.
