The Dispeller of Disputes: Nagarjuna's Vigrahavyavartani ebook
by Jan Westerhoff
This is not just a book for those interested in Buddhist philosophy either.
It is evident that he has put a lot of his own thought into this text. This is not just a book for those interested in Buddhist philosophy either. The insights of Nagarjuna are something anyone interested in philosophy should be familiar with. The closest comparison I can make is with Wittgenstein's thinking as found in the Philosophical Investigations and On Certainty.
Westerhoff has another book called "Nagajuna's Madhyamaka" which is a useful "encyclopedia" of terms you may turn to periodically as you go through "The Dispeller of Disputes". Richard H. Jones has also published an excellent book, titled simply "Nagarjuna", and that, too, is another superb companion book to either Garfield's translation or Westerhoff's "The Dispeller of Disputes".

The Vigrahavyāvartanī is a short work by the second-century Indian Buddhist philosopher Nāgārjuna. In this text, which is written in a lively question-and-answer style he addresses a number of objections (coming both from Buddhists and from non-Buddhists) which have been put forward against his theory of emptiness discussed in his main work, the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā.
Nagarjuna's Vigrahavyavartani is one of the most important Madhyamaka Buddhist philosophical texts.
