At best, conceptions of the 'ideal' Muslim woman can be inspirational and, at worst, ideological straight-jackets for both real women and for understanding Islam.

by A. Duderija (Author). At best, conceptions of the 'ideal' Muslim woman can be inspirational and, at worst, ideological straight-jackets for both real women and for understanding Islam. Adis Duderija does a fine job of exploring the tensions within and between different ideal types and their implications for Muslim women and, let's face it, for men as well.

This is the first work which systematically focuses on identifying and explaining which interpretational mechanisms are responsible for the often very different interpretations of these two concepts.

Duderija has done a impressive job in identifying and comparing the interpretive methodologies of the groups at opposite ends of the spectrum of contemporary Muslim thought, and at the same time situating them in relation to each other and to the long-established methodologies of the surviving Sunni madhahib. There is much in this incredibly dense work that deserves attention from and suggests further avenues of research for other scholars in the field. I gave the book four rather than five stars because it reads too much like a doctoral dissertation to be easily accessible to the non-academic reader. It would have benefited from more careful editing and revision. I hope the author will consider reworking his excellent content for the benefit of a more general readership.

Delivers the 1-2 knockout punch to Neotraditionalist Salafi (NTS) thinking. Once you read about what these guys actually think, their methodology and what they choose to ignore, you realize that the only way something this idiotic could survive is through the application and support of vast amounts of petrodollars.

Also offers a much needed definition of progressive Muslim methodology. The biggest criticism I have heard of progressive Muslims is "They have no method." Well, they DO have a method, so stop dismissing them!!

Writing is extremely academic with lots of jargon words. This book is not easy to get through- even the print was too small. Hopefully Dr. Duderija will write a 'lay-man's version soon.

This book is listed on Amazon for $95, although I was able to get my used copy for $10. There were a lot of typos in it, not sure if that is because there are actual typos in the final version or I got some weird under-proofread bootleg copy.
