Offering a practical approach, this text introduces students to the ideas and practices characteristic of modern corrections while equipping them with the skills necessary to succeed in the field. Its three-pronged approach to corrections includes a thorough description of correctional ideology, including professionalism, policy issues, and society's avowed goals for the correctional enterprise; a comprehensive overview of correctional practice, including the everyday operations of correctional agencies, prisons, jails, and the procedures of parole and probation; and the development of personal skills applicable to the corrections field. The text's central theme throughout is professionalism in corrections.

"Corrections professionalism has garnered support from policy-makers and is winning respect among the public. It serves as this textbook's organizing principle." (from the Preface)

The Second Edition has been extensively updated, revised, and reorganized and now features enhanced coverage of the goals of punishment, restorative and retributive justice, the impact of terrorism on facility management, prison and sentencing reform, professional credentialing, capital punishment, and much more. A free electronic study guide CD-ROM comes packaged with the text.

I can't say that I can review the book- it was just a textbook needed for a class. I'm not sure that anyone needs to know how easy a book to read is that is required for a class. :-) But, the text books online are ALWAYS quick to arrive (usually two days) and are MUCh cheaper than the college bookstore. I also LOVE the Kindle editions since you can search parts of the books AND copy and paste the questions which means you do not have to retype them to turn them in. Great job, Amazon! I will keep purchasing text books again and again! :-)

This post is mainly for col on college students and not particularly the book itself.(although it is an okay read) ... Thank goodness for the companies and individuals who continue to sell these editions, that aren't the very latest, but I literally saved 100's of dollars by buying these older editions. I can probably say about 30 words were changed or rephrased... It is well worth the 4.00 to take the risk and compare it to what's going on in your classroom.. If you get it and can't follow along, at least you tried and you can get the newest within 2 days. But I have not found anything in a different order, or confusing at all. The only thing that cbanges are the current events and examples, but they are still understood by the stories themselves. Most great teachers don't mind and prefer that you're able to save money!!

One of the best textbooks I have read. Lots of photos and good information as well.My professor was the Director of Corrections for our county and he assigned it.

Good information, but the copy was pretty beat up. On the plus side, it saved me 300 buck vs getting the latest edition for my class.

Too much information to dissect. Did not really learn too much from the book. It was a good bit of money to purchase but did not really want to read, it wasn't interesting.
