If you are taking introductory college physics, you will probably be asked to buy the ninth edition of Halliday's Fundamentals of Physics.

If your professor won't be "teaching to the text"- in other words, structuring lessons and assigning problems straight from the book- get this edition instead. It's much, much less expensive, covers the same material, and if you buy the set in parts like this, you have the option of only carrying the parts you're currently studying around with you, instead of the monolithic hardcover that takes up your entire backpack.

Physics, at this level, doesn't change much. Classical mechanics is classical mechanics- there are no new developments that require up-to-the-minute information. Get an older edition if you can get away with it: I recommend this one.
