This is a very dense book. There is so much information in every paragraph that your reading speed will take a huge hit. Plan to take a couple hours to get through a single chapter.

The first few chapters on Cybernetics and Systems Theory are interesting and clearly explained. I found myself wishing this book was in color, with graphics and charts to help compare/contrast the dense information. The criticisms of weird organization and difficult to compare theories are valid. The author tends to slide information in here and there and it's easy to get confused as to what information pertains to what theory, especially in the chapter that covers Strategic Therapy, which has 3 distinct sub-models.

I hope the author reads these reviews and includes comparison charts in future editions. If every chapter had a detailed layout that clearly delineated important theory breakdowns such as Basic Assumptions of Theory, Problem Formation, Therapist Stance, Interventions, Definition of Health, Goals of Therapy, Natural Progression, etc., the book would have been far more helpful.

As grad students, we were tasked with creating our own spreadsheets of such information, comparing and contrasting the various modalities. The variations in our output were disappointing and was the result of the often confusing layout of the text.

The information is there, however. The book is breathtaking in scope and will reward the slow, detailed reader with a firm understanding of the basic models of therapy. If the book was clearly organized to facilitate comparison and contrasting of models, it would have easily earned 5 stars.

This textbook is pretty small, at a huge price. The pages are so thin I can literally read the backside and front of the next page through the paper. The quality of the printing is also terrible. The printing is newspaper quality and the grayscale and show-through makes the whole book look like it was faxed or photocopied in b&w. It's very tiring on the eyes to read.

Kindle devices are great for the quick download experience. Beware! This kindle eBook can only be registered on 2 devices. I have never had any problem with any eBbook that I have bought. I have many e readers: on my phone, laptop, pc, tablet etc. The hassle I had to go through tonight to get it off of one device, just so I could download it on another device really takes away from the purpose of its convenience. If I buy this book, I should be able to download it at my convenience and preference on ALL of my devices. This book is not worth the price, if there are limitations on how many devices I can download it on. I understand not being able to download on a device that is not registered to me, but to not be able to share with my family on devices that are registered under my name or my other devices for my convenience is absurd.

This was purchased for a course on Family Therapy. It is definitely on the pricey side, but don't stop reading there! It was $30.00 less than at my college bookstore and it's hardcover! The book is made of premium quality paper also, and while I hate to do it, I must highlight in order to remember what I'm reading--just part of the way that I learn. The highlighting does NOT bleed through to the other side of the paper, so you know that the quality is high.

As for the writing--the book is written extremely well with not only professionalism, but with a lot of heart. It reminded me a bit of Irvin Yalom's book, The Gift of Therapy, because of that. It is an extraordinary book in its scope and the author's ability to express concepts extraordinarily clearly. I especially appreciated the timeline that was provided at the beginning of the book which shows the development of family therapy in the context of modern historical events. The only fault I found with that particular section was that, while it did include modern day historical landmarks, it completely excluded any mention of the advent or existence of World War II and the dampening effects that it had on all of the development of every field of human endeavor in the world at that time. One mention of WW II would have been sufficient.

I also would like to see more inclusiveness of minority groups that are minorities because of the paucity of their numbers, rather than just based upon their being underprivileged groups. Modern American psychology seems to rule out certain groups that are definitively minority groups because they are successfully integrated into American society despite the small numbers. One such group is the American Hmong culture of whom we have heard little, but another group is the American Jewish culture of which we have heard much though they are less then 1% of American society. We need to start really practicing inclusiveness without excluding true minority groups despite their successes; they too have their challenges.

THis is a great book. Don't be put off by the price.

I just started reading the book and I am thoroughly enjoying it so far. But I seriously just had a panic attack because mine, too, looks like it was faxed or xeroxed, hot off the press in newspaper print. Really thin, grainy looking pages. I thought I might have bought the wrong book. I feel like it's going to fall apart. Are there fakes going around? It is a hardback copy. Paid $70 for it. Maybe this is the $70 version? It's supposed to be new, too. Well, I'm grateful I got it for under $100 and that it's a good read. I guess, thanks to whoever copied it for me? I really needed it. My first paper is Tuesday. Wish me luck!
