Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five (New Version) ebook

by Penelope Leach

Your Baby and Child book.

Your Baby and Child book.

I cannot recommend Penelope Leach's book enough.

Comprehensive - "Your Baby & Child" is essentially 5 books in one, with a lengthy chapter devoted to each major stage of your baby's first five years: The Newborn, The Settled Baby, The Older Baby, The Toddler, and The Young Child. This approach means you can jump in whenever is right for you and not worry you've missed out on some prior information you should have covered. This might not seem like a big deal but new parents often have little time or patience for thumbing through pages of identical type trying to find the one section they need that very instant, especially if they have a crying baby on their hands. I cannot recommend Penelope Leach's book enough.

Leach is best known for her book Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five, published in 1977, which has sold over two million copies to date and won the BMA award for best medical book for general audiences in 1998. Leach's most popular work is Your Baby and Child, which appeared in extensively revised versions in 1988, & 2003 and 2010. The book is divided into five major sections, covering newborns, "settled babies", "older babies", "toddlers" and "young children. Each section includes information on expected developmental milestones and patterns in the areas of sleep, eating, "crying and comforting", speech, and physical growth.

But it is not written by a doctor and it tends to be a little preachy on slightly controversial topics such as circumcision and breastfeeding. Citiți recenzia completă. I purchased this as a gift for some friends. It was my favorite baby/parenting book when my daughters were babies and toddlers. The author has a wonderful way of explaining things. She is not an alarmist, and she respects both babies and parents. I can't recommend this highly enough. THIS is the only parenting book you'll need for those early years.

Your Baby & Child - From Birth To Age Five, New Edition, Revised and Expanded This was our baby bible when we raised our boys. It is wonderful to know what is "normal" and to have something to base your baby's behavior on. I also love the attitude of Dr. Leach. She keeps you calm and has wonderful tips on things to do with baby and child (games to play and learn)Your Baby & Child - From Birth To Age Five, New Edition, Revised and Expanded

Penelope Leach was my god, years ago, when I had my baby, who had a very difficult infancy. She confirmed for me that a mother should listen to her heart & her baby - not experts - when deciding how to respond..... that one's own intuition provides the best answers for how to deal with the difficulties that arise. My baby was very colicky in her first months and almost all the books and friends I referred to for help advised that, when all the usual remedies failed, I should just "leave her alone and she'll eventually stop/learn to stop crying". I tried to once or twice, but was so miserable and guilty each time that I decided, instead--for both our sake's--that either I or my husband needed to hold her/BE with her until her pain (or whatever it was that was causing her misery) passed and she was able to sleep. I have never regretted that decision, but it was Ms. Leach's books that supported me in my conviction that it was the right one for my baby - no matter what anyone else thought. As Ms. Leach says: Listen to your baby. Listen to your SELF and you will find joy in your relationship with him or her - always!

I bought this for my daughter-in-law because it was my bible while pregnant and during the first years of my son's life. I'm assuming the current editions are as good as mine was, and I hope they are. P. Leach is thorough, so informative and comforting - she helps new Moms feel more in control at any time, for any reason, whether it's a moment of panic or just random questions running through a mother's mind.

The best resource I found while preparing and being a new parent.

As a first-time mother-to-be, I had the good fortune of accidentally discovering this wonderful book in an earlier edition. It was the only one of its kind in the bookstore at the University where I worked, so I trusted that it would be a good guide. It was.

My son is 28 years old, now, and about to be a first-time father. I can think of no better gift to give him than Penelope Leach's treatise on the child from birth to five. Viewing the growth and learning process from the child's point of view genuinely helped this once novice parent adapt and improvise to what, I'm sure, was the betterment of the child and the greater joy of the parent.

It will be worthwhile to read this book many times over.

This was recommended to me by another mom and I took it out of the library for the maximum # of renewals and then decided it was worth buying. It's not a book you turn to to solve a specific problem like sleep issues, illnesses, etc. It gives you an idea of how babies develop and what to expect. She suggests things without being preachy or judgmental in a way that makes me trust her opinions on childrearing.

I keep this book around and read parts of it when my son is approaching a new stage. My husband also reads it if I leave it in the bathroom and he is receptive to the author's information and opinions too.

I find Penelope Leach to be a great resource with solid parenting advice for every stage. She offers very practical, grounded advice. I snuck in reading time during naps and after bedtime and found myself wanting to soak it all in. Having an understanding of each stage of your baby's life is so helpful and comforting. I found I was more confident after reading each section. I like how the book is organized hitting the major points of each stage/area of development. I find myself gifting this to new parents all the time.
I purchased this book the first time 27 years ago. I used it as a resource over and over. I loaned it to young woman who was expecting, and she kept it, so I had to get another one. This purchase went to my niece and her husband who just was expecting at the time. The book gave her great insite, and she still refers to it frequently. She says it's the best of all her baby books. (Her baby is 2 months old now). I recommend for any expectant parent or as a refresher for a Grandparent.
