An in depth, perhaps overly detailed, review of GCHQ, Britain's equivalent to NSA. It starts with the early 20th Century genus of Britain's code breakers and has an extensive, and fascinating, story of Bletchley Park where a collection of eccentric university mathematicians, anthropologists and the like performed heroic efforts to break Germany's Enigma codes thereby, arguably, shortening the war by a couple of years and enabling Britain to survive the U boat blockade. The book covers the post WWII Era in more detail than I cared about, though the political dimensions of the continued US/UK relationship between NSA and GCHQ were very interesting. All together it's a comprehensive analysis and should be of interest to students of this subject.

Was a gift. My friend loves it and says he wonders where they got all the details. I wonder too ... it IS about a "secret" organization, after all. But he really, really enjoyed this book, and I'm delighted therefore.

Immensely detained but readable account of surveillance from the world wars to the internet era, from a British perspective, with analysis of the special relationship, and tensions, between British GCHQ and US NSA.

Good history on a subject from Britain not usually addressed. Jived well with what I already knew.

I'm a History buff and purchased the Kindle edition of this book up after reading about the Mossad. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. During the time of my reading it, my wife became a Kindle widow.

As a former Cheltenham resident, I was hoping for more details on GCHQ itself between its founding and, say, 25 years ago (expiration of Official Secrets Act statute of limitations on disclosure?). There is very little in it dealing with the day-to-day life of the various Cheltenham locations or even the Uk "stations" in the seventies or eighties.

Quite a thick (but disappointing) read.

How is it we have not heard more about this before? Because it was a secret. Great read, full of detail.
Lot of details about WW-2 Intelligence operations and start of US/UK cooperation. Useful reference for anyone researching SIGINT. Also covers some cold war operations.
