Social Reform or Revolution? (German: Sozialreform oder Revolution?) is an 1899 pamphlet by Polish-German Marxist theorist Rosa Luxemburg
Social Reform or Revolution? (German: Sozialreform oder Revolution?) is an 1899 pamphlet by Polish-German Marxist theorist Rosa Luxemburg. Luxemburg argues that trade unions, reformist political parties and the expansion of social democracy-while important to the proletariat's development of class create a socialist society as Eduard Bernstein, among others, argued.
Luxemburg wrote Reform or Revolution as a reaction to a book by Eduard Bernstein, another leading figure in the Rosa Luxemburg was a firebrand socialist, a pioneering political woman and Marxist theorist. She was a member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD, the same ones in coalition with Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats over a century later!) and later the Communist Party of Germany. In 1919 Luxemburg was killed by German paramilitaries after a failed socialist uprising.
An effective refutation of revisionist interpretations of Marxist doctrine, it defines the position of scientific socialism on the issues of social reforms, the state, democracy, and the character of the proletarian revolution. Reform or Revolution opposes Edward Bernstein's revisionist theories, which rejected Marxism in favor of trade unionism and parliamentary procedures
In Reform or revolution Rosa Luxemburg provided a comprehensive political response to Bernstein.
In Reform or revolution Rosa Luxemburg provided a comprehensive political response to Bernstein. Unlike other critics of Bernstein’s, Luxemburg was not merely aiming to defend the status quo. In attacking Bernstein’s reformism she was implicitly challenging the existing reformist practice of the SPD leaders. Today, almost a century after her murder, the name of Rosa Luxemburg is a source of inspiration to socialists everywhere. Together with Lenin, Trotsky, Karl Liebknecht and Connolly, she defended the cause of socialist revolution and proletarian internationalism and died fighting for it. Reform or Revolution opposes Edward Bernstein's revisionist theories, which rejected Marxism in favor of trade unionism and parliamentary procedures.
