I'm really quite taken with this book. It's not my typical fare, but a friend thought I would find it interesting. How right she was!
As I scanned the introduction, I was immediately captured. Ms. Maglaya's positive outlook, her confidence and sincerity, and most of all her love for America captivated me. As I read further I realized this book is full of wisdom as well as useful, practical advice and information.
There is something for everyone in this marvelous book. While written for new and aspiring immigrants, it practical tips for getting along in life will prove invaluable to everyone, particularly to young people on the verge of starting out on their own.
The book is well organized, with chapters aimed at specific slices of the immigrant experience. Chapter 1, Getting Legal Status, focuses necessarily on immigrants. Chapter 2 does so, as well, but the focus starts to broaden. By chapter 3 Ms. Maglaya is speaking to everyone who wants or needs a better understanding of this nation and culture, and how to be successful in it. Consider, for example, her practical advice for getting out on your own (Chapter 2), keeping yourself fit (Chapter 3), the benefits of a military career (Chapter 5), money management (Chapter 6), common scams and other pitfalls (Chapter 7), and so on. Throughout she breaks up the narrative with useful graphics, background information, and relevant quotations.
The real strength of this book, though, is Ms. Maglaya herself. She has a rich and varied background. Her approach to life makes her a standard bearer for the type of immigration this country needs (and usually gets). The values she espouses, the ethics she projects, and above all the pride with which she speaks her Americaness is truly heartwarming. She projects a trait common to most immigrants, but which gets lost in today's political discussions about immigration; to wit, she came here because this is where she saw her future. She wanted to be here, and she is a true American. She has an unbounded love and appreciation for this country that is lost among many of us that were born and raised here.
I can't help but wonder how many languages this book will be translated into. I hope it will be many because she will be a wonderful ambassador of the American spirit. Three cheers, Ms. Maglaya, and a rousing five stars!

I read Gary Shteyngart's The New York Times Sunday

Book Review of this work for the July 4, 2004 issue.

In a pretty long and trenchant essay peppered with

sardonic humor, of Adeva Maglaya's work, he said that

this new book is "remarkable ...(because)... few books

have come closer to telling me what it means to be an

immigrant in America today."

Shteyngart, author of the highly acclaimed novel, "The

Russian Debutante's Handbook" further added,

"...Religious, resourceful, highly flexible and yet

essentially conservative, the immigrant is the most

reliably American of all Americans, the indispensable

citizen, the bedrock of the American Dream with all

its tainted pleasures and millenial lunacies... The

world rightfully looks to America as the nation most

welcoming to immigrants --and yet what many highly

educated immigrants do not know, or do not care to

know, about one another's struggles could fill a book.

This one, for instance."

He was right.

For me, this book is highly recommended reading for

new immigrants as well as those from the outside

looking in. I venture to guess that even old timers,

can get a lot from this book as well. They can do

their friends and relatives a favor but giving them

this book as an introductory manual.

Its companion guide, "The Immigrant's Little Quote

Book for Success," is just perfect for immigrants who

have very little time to read but would like to

understand the journey they are taking as an immigrant

in this brave new world.

Few books have ever addressed the issue of immigrants

in the way this books has. In easy-to-understand,

conversational and unpretentious language and in a

format that is logical and accessible, the guide has

helped me tremendously in gaining perspective of my

own personal journey as an immigrant. It may already

have prevented me in making serious financial

mistakes.

The well selected quotations tied in with the book's

content are extremely helpful and at times, amusing.

The strong point of this book is in its insistence and

emphasis on the psychological and spiritual moorings

that enable the immigrant to go through the

challenging periods of coping, thriving and even the

possibility of living totally as a human being with a

satisfying life.

This book gives you a heads-up. If you are looking for

guidance as an immigrant in America or hoping to come

here and live as one, this book is a must-read. It

will give you a headstart and a clearer understanding

of what you are up against.

I must admit I was skeptical - I thought there must be little behind the good packaging. Sort of like some Japanese product...nice packaging but shouldn't-there-be-more-stuff-inside? This book is a definite MUST read for all immigrants.....very practical tips on playground rules! The book contains a compilation of very valuable lessons-"how-to-thrive" tips. As immigrants, we get our lessons on "how-to" in America from personal experiences of friends and family. We then "copy" the experience but later realize the tutorials did not include the minor stumbles and falls. I highly recommend you have a copy of this book and give this as a present to your family members. It is a very good investment. Sure, continue to listen to Uncle Tony's war stories but when you get home, open Adeva-Maglaya's book for a reality check!
