If you have an interest in gangsters of any sort, this is a great way of keeping your stories straight.

THE WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ORGANIZED CRIME is a riveting excursion into the dark underworld of the Mafia, drug cartels and urban gangs; an engrossing collection of the most celebrated and historically important names and events connected with International Organized Crime. I buy a lot of books about Organized Crime/The Mafia, and this Encyclopedia written by Jay Robert Nash is a great addition to any library. This book is very addictive, always interesting and full of fascinating information. If, like me, you really enjoy reading books about The Mafia/True Crime then you need to add this Encyclopedia to your collection.

Of course you'll find all the legendary names, gangs or events: Capone, Luciano, Adonis, Lansky, Siegel, Giancana, Genovese, Marcello, Trafficante, McGurn, St-Valentine Day Massacre, The Black Hand, Diamond, O'Bannion, Accardo, Bonanno, Schultz, Gotti, The Castellammarese War, Strauss, Ness, Hoffa, Moran, Anastasia, Gambino, and so many more. You'll also find information on more obscure gangsters and gangs, particularly gangs from the early 1900's. Very fascinating read.

What's great is that this book is not only about America, you'll find information about criminals/gangs/events from all over the world: The Yakuza, Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel, The Corsican Vendetta, The Kray Brothers, Osano Kenji, Rafael Caro Quintero, The French Riviera gang wars, and so many more. You'll find entries about China, Japan, Mexico, France and other countries, Nash did a good job researching these entries.

I highly recommend this book. As usual Jay Robert Nash committed a few mistakes here and there ( his trademark ), but overall this is a wonderful Encyclopedia to own. If you want something a little more up to date then I recommend "The Mafia Encyclopedia" by Carl Sifakis and "The Encyclopedia of Gangsters" by Michael Newton, both available here on Amazon for a good price. :)

Trying to find a good reference book about organized crime? Want one at a good price? Jay Robert Nash has created the perfect book for you with World Encyclopedia of Organized Crime from De Capo Press.
The over 600 pages of the Who's Who in organized crime is covered in an A to Z format. From Joe Adonis, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Bugs Moran and so many others, you'll find the fascinating stories and cross-references.
You may find other books more detailed, but I have found this book to be complete in the overall number of people covered. The book is an easy read and the index makes it easy to look up anybody or any topic.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better value for your money. About the only thing missing is a cd-rom software application.

I was disappointed in this book. The word "world" on the cover leads you to believe that this is a comprehensive tome but there is precious little information regarding organized crime in other parts of world outside of the United States. There is scant information regarding the crime groups in Asia, Europe or the Baltic States. Also, the repetition of words and phrases becomes tiresome. I place most blame for this on the editor and the publisher. (the word lucrative is overused.) It reads as if the author had a template and filled in blanks for each entry. In addition, some entries contain information that is not accurate. I was glad to see many photographs here but was wanting more. Overall, I do not recommend this book to anyone.

While its some feat to assemble this amount of information in one boopk, the author never actually goes out to check the accuracy of the data. This causes many factual mistakes to merge. Some are very basic, such as the statement that Jack McGurn was born in Chicago, rather than in Sicily. In a field like this, where errors are commonplace, you need a book that tries to get the truth about personalities and events if its not to be just another myth-spreader. This sadly isn't it.

I first bought this book in 1993 before I got on the internet, and I thought it was a very useful reference. Since then, I've realized there are better resources to be found on the Web. This book does contain some errors (as all encyclopedias do), it focuses mostly on the US (not the world) and on the major names (not the smaller but significant figures), but I've kept my copy because it's still an enjoyable read.
