What's Black about Black and Green? (Apologies to Pepper Miller)

When Jamal Ali told me that he had written a book about black people and the Green movement, I was suspicious. Do black people really need a special book just for them? Special instructions aren't needed to teach us how to screw in a compact fluorescent light bulb; and we know not to leave the light on after we leave a room, just the same as whites. If you want to read about how to be "Green," there's already plenty of literature out there about why it's important and how to do it.

However, very shortly after I started reading Ali's book, Black and Green: Black Insights for the Green Movement, I realized that he was onto something. Black people in this country have a heritage of making do with little, reinventing and adapting what they had. Much of that sensibility has been lost or at least put aside. Also, Ali breaks down the Green subject by sharing his family traditions and recollections in a way that I was able to identify with immediately. And apparently all of us black people who think we're pretty "schooled" about "Green" have room to improve ourselves, our cities, stores, churches, etc., right up until we die--yes, there's a section in the book about "Green burials."

Ali writes about these issues with a mix of indignation and concern, but ultimately is optimistic. In the end, Black and Green is really a book about survival. Right now, we are barely making it. Let's read it and piece together something more lasting.
