It's the Girl in the Red Truck, Charlie Brown is the 32nd prime-time animated TV special based upon the popular comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. It is a hybrid of animation and live-action footage, and features Spike instead of the core Peanuts characters. A spin-off focused on Spike's unrequited love for a young woman, it was described to being similar to Beauty and the Beast.

This is the first Ravenna Press edition of Wilson's novel, a cult favorite originally published in 1987 by Knopf, with a new Introduction by Marc Kipniss. Published alongside his short story collection, Sonja's Blue, these books are interesting evidence in the controversy over the influence of former Knopf editor Gordon Lish (who edited The Red Truck but not the short stories.) Lish edited Wilson as he edited Raymond Carver, with dazzling results that may be compared to the author's original and unedited writing in Sonja's Blue.

I found a beat-up, doggy-eared copy of this unexpected gem in the book swap library of a hotel in a backpacker hotel in Vietnam two years ago. It had obviously passed through the hands of many travelers before me, but when I finished it (somewhere in Cambodia), I decided to bring it home with me. It's not a book you'd share with everyone, but it got under my skin and I bought a copy for my new boyfriend so he could learn a little more about me. (The book has nothing to do with Southeast Asia -- I think it could only have been written in the U.S. and only by an American author -- but that's where I happened to stumble into it.)

While absorbing this book, at times I couldn't hold it close enough. I experienced a genuine oneness with the world Rudy created. In the next moment, the shift in my awareness it caused was so foreign, I wanted to throw the book as far away from me as possible. But of course, I held on... for all I was worth. This is a real literary treasure, in a class of its own as is the author. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Wilson's work.

Words cannot begin to describe how much I love this book. I've read it many times although I no longer read it from front to back. I just read wherever it opens up to. It's so beautiful. Sad but very lovely. I still don't understand it, but I don't really care. It has an intoxicating effect. So cool. This book, along with Scott Bradfield's "History of Luminous Motion" and Denis Johnson's "Jesus' Son" are like a Holy Trinity. They make up their own strange universe that all of their (maniacal, as one of the other reviewers so aptly put it)fans occasionally inhabit.

This is going to be quite a short review, since it's been years since I've read this book. I do remember just how beautiful and vivid a picture the words paint. Pick it up now that its coming out in paperback. I had to spend like 25 bux on a used copy of the hardback edition because it was so hard to find. It's definately worth it. Oh yes, beware, it has a morbid twist to it, (not freaky or insane, just a darker feel) so if you hate that in a book, this might not be for you.
