She's lucky that she didn't die, because her naivete could have gotten her killed. Bing underestimated her own perceptions of inner-city gangs, as is evident throughout this book. One simply cannot go from a charmed life and write a hardcore book without immersing oneself into the culture as well.

The start of the book, my new favourite lady Leon Bing spends in youth detention centres chatting to these gangs members. There is a true fluency to the way they flaunt the gang attitude, accomplishments and how they have accentuated said gangs reputation. We meet a lot of young G's here.

Now, when you're in the middle of a fancy palace, it can be hard to know what war means. War means seeing your fine things burned in front of you! War is agony, and you should be doing every last damned thing you can to stop it from coming to your door! - Leon. Leon Stirling, a character in The Crown & The Flame series, is a knight and the former Captain of the Royal Guard of Stormholt

Do or Die is the first insider account of teenage gangs--the lives, loves, and battles of children who kill--from the only journalist ever allowed inside this closed and dangerous world.

This is no West Side Story. Welcome to a world where teenagers wear colostomy bags and have scrapbooks filled with funeral invitations; where a young man, after being shot in the chest, drives himself to the hospital; where another youngster, caught in crossfire, uses his girlfriend as a human shield; where teenage gangsters are kidnapped, tortured, and held for six-figure ransoms; where kids hum the latest movie's theme music while killing people. It's a world of clickheads, sherms, bangers, ballers, and mummyheads; a world where the strongest feelings of family come from other gang members; a world where the most potent feelings of self-worth come from murder.

An outstanding, blood-soaked page-turner from a real-life THUG and GANGSTA. From off-handed recollections of horrifically cringeworthy violence, open-air dope dealing, gang fidelity and reprisals over the slightest of perceived transgressions - always attempting to keep one step ahead of the biggest, baddest gang in town - the POLICE, this introduction to OGs (in particular Sanyika "Monster Kody" Shakur, who went on to write his autobiography. 'MONSTER' [as well as a not-as-well received 'Novel']) will rightly chill you to the bone. A crucial building block in anyone interested in American gang mentality and how the gang has become the 'new family' in non-existent father-figure homes, both 'urban' and 'suburban.'

One simply cannot go from a charmed life and write a hardcore book without immersing oneself into the culture as well. Do or die is written as if someone was doing a very half-jacked college paper, a few days of observation here, a few there, and bam-Do or die. Sadly, this book is an inadequate representation into the gravity of gangs in America. Granted it is rather dated, but the problems remain the same

This book is life changing for someone. It is written in a way that provides the average citizen the closest look into gang life they can get without being a statistic. Their stories are heartbreaking but the lifespan and life expectancy are pandemic. What is a mother to do? How did Los Angeles allow the segregation that created the violent boundaries? Maybe I missed the outrage after this book was released. My only negative comment is there is no follow-up. How many lived, where are they now? The author has not responded.

I got this book for a college class on juvenile delinquency. It is a very real, unfiltered accounting of gang life. I had a hard time getting through it, but found it very informative.

I saw a TV news show awhile back with Bing and decided to give the book a shot and bought it. Well, she sure tells it right from AtoZ!
Having been a law enforcement officer for 25 yrs, 23 yrs here in SoCal, I can tell you that gangs are BAD out here. Of course they have now infiltrated the whole US.
A "must read" for those interested in what the mentality of gang members is really like, what these people think and do. It is NOT pretty folks!
Highly recommended reading!

This is a classic case of "don't judge a book by its cover." This book looks like a sensationalist piece of crap, but it's actually just the opposite. The book is structured as a series of close, personal profiles of one or two LA gang members, and their family and related activities during that point in their lives. The author, Leon Bing, pays close attention to detail, and seems to notice all the right things. The best part of the book, which was hard to put down, is that it's still relevant today, despite being more than 20 years old. Some predictions made towards the end, in fact, by the author and some of her subjects, have come true.

Overall, an excellent piece of non-fiction, which humanizes young LA gangmembers at the same time it condemns them.

Read and imagine what's it like to grow up in the streets of LA excellent shipping and very informative
Dialogue is real, from first person point of views. It makes you think about gangsters from the early 1990's.
