Understanding & Controlling Stuttering book.

Understanding & Controlling Stuttering. A Comprehensive New Approach Based on the Valsalva Hypothesis. By William D. Parry, . The key to its approach is the Valsalva Hypothesis – an exciting new theory that explains stuttering blocks as a neurological confusion between voice and the body’s Valsalva mechanism, in response to anxiety or the anticipation of difficulty in speaking. As a result, the larynx is prepared to exert effort instead of phonating a word’s vowel sound, causing speech to get stuck on the consonant or glottal stop preceding the vowel.

The book is very well written from the beginning till end. The explanation of the speech mechanism, the basics of speech, speech functions of the brain, the Valsalva mechanism and all information are written in intelligible terms. The exercises for Valsalva and speech control are very well proposed.

Because persons who stutter aren't taught to control their Valsalva mechanism, many continue to have difficulty controlling their stuttering blocks and often relapse after therapy, without understanding why they are unable to stop stuttering

Puzzled about stuttering? Do you wonder why words often feel like brick walls, even before you try to say them? Or why your blocks get stronger the harder you try to force through them? If so, you need to know about the Valsalva Hypothesis - an exciting new theory that explains stuttering blocks as a neurological confusion between voice and the body's Valsalva mechanism, in response to anxiety or the anticipation of difficulty in speaking. As a result, the larynx is prepared to exert effort instead of phonating a word's vowel sound, causing speech to get stuck on the consonant or glottal stop preceding the vowel. This theory was partially explained in the very popular Second Edition of this book (now out of print). That edition has now been greatly surpassed by the Revised and Expanded Third Edition, published in 2013. The Third Edition, which is written in clear, every-day language, fits together the pieces of the stuttering puzzle as never before. The Third Edition demonstrates how neurological, physiological, and psychological factors interact to stimulate and perpetuate stuttering through a Valsalva-Stuttering Cycle. It sheds new light on virtually every aspect of stuttering behavior -- its causes, its variability, and its many forms of treatment. Finally, it outlines a totally new comprehensive self-help program based on Valsalva Stuttering Therapy, aimed at relaxing the Valsalva mechanism, eliminating blocks, freeing your inherent fluency, and allowing you to speak in an easy, effortless, and natural way. The Revised and Expanded Third Edition contains many new insights and exercises, developed through actual clinical experience and experimentation, involving the participation of dozens of persons who stutter from all over the world.

If William Parry had only written the best book on stuttering for stutterers, that would be an accomplishment in itself, but he has also written the best book for the layman or fluent speaker as well. Dr. Parry's book is exhaustive in its description of exactly what the stutterer experiences (a stutterer himself, he has walked the walked and "talked the talk" and knows of what he preaches)during a stuttering block

So much of stuttering therapy and research remains mired in the dark ages of controversy, elaborate "cure" claims and mechanical devices, but Parry cuts through all this to the chase of what stuttering IS and most importantly WHAT IT IS NOT!! Since almost stutterers (even severe ones like this writer) can speak with 100% fluency under some circumstances, why all the continued emphasis out there on articulation exercises, training the stutterer to do something he/she is perfectly capable of doing as well as any "normal" speaker except under stress--which for a stutterer means any speaking situation where he or she is attempting to communicate words to a listener?

Speech for the stutterer is a mine field akin to asking a person to take a stroll through a park but informing them beforehand that the park is riddled with underground mines and that one wrong step will blow them to Kingdom-come. What should be a pleasant part of life is for the stutterer a constant nightmare of fear, self-loathing and avoidance, each reinforcing the other and perpetuating a cycle of frustration and pain. What makes this even more intolerable for the stutterer is the knowledge that he or she possesses fluency but that it is somehow mysteriously out of grasp. Dr. Parry covers all the current treatments, hypotheses and approaches fairly and without prejudgment. He has clearly hit upon something overlooked by so many before him: what does the stutterer do at the moment of stuttering. The answer lies in the Valsalva response that is triggered for the stutterer by the act of speech (phonation.)

The book contains useful charts, diagrams and suggestions for self-therapy that are clear and concise.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone who stutters or anyone knows someone who does.

William Parry is my Trombone guru! I'm a trombone player who has stuttered for 17 years. However, I was a great trombonist in High School, winning awards and everything. My stuttering on the horn started in my 2nd year of college as a music major and went on until just recently when I purchased William's book.
Although the first few chapters are lengthy and take time to read and absorb, it's important to read the entire book. I'm sure glad I did, because the last few chapters have a gold mine of information.
3 weeks after finishing the book, my stuttering is reduced drastically. Not only that, but if I ever stutter again, (and perhaps I will), I'll know how to deal with it.
Get this book and make sure to read the entire book (it's a bit long, but very helpful). Then do the exercises he prescribes (and do them religiously) and watch it work miracles on your stuttering! This is the book !!!
Currently, I'm now a trombonist in demand and my students are also improving. I'm performing very hard solos in very successful bands while getting paid. The trick is to do the exercises no matter what, and everything will improve as time goes on.

Whether you are a speech therapist/pathologist or a stutterer, I highly recommend that you buy this book.
It demystifies several aspects of stuttering, including the speech blocks that are so often experienced. It explains the neurological confusion between speech and the valsalva mechanism and how this affects disfluency. It explains why males predominate the stuttering population by pointing out sexual differences in the valsalva mechanism.
Mr. William Parry also provides a self-therapy program called Valsalva Control, which can be effectively used to control stuttering.
After reading this book, for the first time, I was able to get non-stutterers to personally experience the closing of the larynx and other physiological symptoms of a stuttering block created by the valsalva mechanism.
This book gave me the "Ah-ha! That explains so much." feeling.

Previously no Speech or language therapist could help me. This book first helped me to understand why I stutter. I have always felt that something is wrong in me when I stuttered. Now I know the problem and can work to solve it.

Controlling stuttering won't work overnight. But you have good chance to get a fluent speaker in some weeks. But this needs practice and self-control over the day. Specifically you need to change your behavior.

This was the best book I have ever read in regards to stuttering. I would highly recommend every person who stutters to buy this book, you will not be let down. I have stuttered for over 40 years and have never found anything that has helped me as much as the techniques in this book.

The books challenges you to look at stuttering from a wider perspective and it is a great summary about stuttering in terms of methods, causes, therapies..More valuable to me is that it's written by someone who is/was a stutterer.

A well thought through and logical technique to control stuttering. Easy to read and the practice techniques are a master stroke that all speech language professionals should know about.
Good book. Gives a different perpective. Definately interesting for those who tries to see things deeply.
