Gaston, a veteran of World War I suffers from amnesia and has spent the last 18 years in a hospital trying to regain his memories. Although he is claimed as a son by various families, a rich Duchess believes the true family Gaston belongs to is the Renauds. Gaston travels to the Renaud's estate alongside his lawyer Huspar.

Anouilh enrolled as a law student in the University of Paris, only to abandon the course after just eighteen months when he found employment in the advertising industry.

The play has been adapted three times – firstly as a film in 1944, directed by Anouilh himself, secondly in 2004 as a television film directed by Pierre Boutron and thirdly in March 2016 as "Welcome Home, Captain Fox!" at the Donmar Warehouse in London.
