Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is considered to be the first true modern atlas. Written by Abraham Ortelius, strongly encouraged by Gillis Hooftman and originally printed on 20 May 1570 in Antwerp, it consisted of a collection of uniform map sheets and supporting text bound to form a book for which copper printing plates were specifically engraved. The Ortelius atlas is sometimes referred to as the summary of sixteenth-century cartography.

Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (pronounced, "Theatre of the World") is considered to be the first true modern atlas. After the initial publication of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Ortelius regularly revised and expanded the atlas, reissuing it in various formats until his death in 1598. They started with an allegorical title page, on which the five known continents, were presented by allegorical women, with Europe as the Queen.

German and English are quite unusual in this regard. Someone pronouncing my name with a French accent, however, says, since French doesn't vocalize the r in coda position, and therefore French lacks these unusual diphthongs. Syllable-final r in French, however, has another particularity related to sonority and syllable structure. In a syllable with two consonants in the coda you would expect the first one to have a higher sonority than the second one.

Abraham Ortelius was one of the most prominent citizens of Antwerp, at a time when this city was a major trading centre of Europe, and indeed of the world. His first biography was written shortly after his death in the form of a book of mourning, entitled Insignium huius aevi poetarum lacrymae, in obytum C. Abrahami Ortelii, Antverpiani. Its author was his good friend Francis Sweertius, and it appeared in 1601.
