White first wrote about the flivver in "Farewell to Model T," which appeared in the New Yorker in 1936. Rich in comic descriptions of the T's many eccentricities and the absurd demands it put on its devoted owners, this was the first of White's essays to bring him fame. It is here published for the first time with "From Sea to Shining Sea," in which he conjures the backroads and main streets of an unspoiled America. Together, these essays are an affectionate tribute to the car that holds a mythic place in the American imagination.

In 1922, just out of college and at loose ends, E.B. White set off across America in a Model T. He left his map at home, but packed his typewriter— his true destination, he tells us, was the world of letters. It is rich in comic descriptions of the eccentricities of the car, the demands it put on its devoted owners, and the hardware and decorative accessories—from 98-cent anti-rattlers to the "de-luxe flower vase of the cut-glass anti-splash type"—that kept them pouring over the Sears Roebuck catalog. If there was an owner's manual for the flivver, it didn't begin to divulge what the owner needed to know. That's where theory, speculation, superstition, and metaphysics came in: "I remember once spitting into a timer," White recalls, "not in anger, but in a spirit of research." For those easily addicted to fluent, graceful conversation, intelligent reflection, grammar and syntax extraordinaire.

If you are beguiled by thought that is keen in it's expression, comfortable in it's expectation that you are listening, E B White's writing will engage you and before you know it, you'll want more....

MY LATE FATHER LOVED WHEN I READ THIS BOOK TO HIM, OVER AND AGAIN, AND HE WOULD HAVE ME PAUSE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE SO THAT HE COULD ADD HIS "TWO-CENT'S WORTH" BEST AS HE COULD REMEMBER IT. I LATER BOUGHT A SECOND COPY FOR ANOTHER ELDERLY GENT ... GOT THE SAME REACTION. IT WAS FUN TO WATCH THIS WONDERFUL LITTLE BOOK BE ABLE TO EVOKE A SHAKE OF THE HEAD OR JUST PURE AMUSEMENT EVERY TIME THE PASSAGES WERE READ.

If anyone ever wanted to know why America was in love with the Model T for decades, all you would have to do is read this charming small volume. White's mastery of the language shines through as he remembers with great warmth an era of his youth. Delightful.

This publication comes looking like a book, but is a very short essay by the great EB White. Interesting but not really worth the money, unless you're a serious Ford aficionado.
Shak
Beautiful reminiscence, written from the heart, full of love toward this remarkable and pioneering vehicle. If you love motorized ways of communications you would love the nostalgia in this book.
Molace
While EB White always is good reading, this edition is overpriced: its layout is such that the content is no more than half of what the page count might predict.
Love the book!
