Zentatsu Richard Baker (born March 30, 1936), born Richard Dudley Baker, is an American Soto Zen master (or roshi), the founder and guiding teacher of Dharma Sangha-which consists of Crestone Mountain Zen Center located in Crestone, Colorado and the Buddhistisches Studienzentrum (Johanneshof) in Germany's Black Forest. As the American Dharma heir to Shunryu Suzuki, Baker assumed abbottship of the San Francisco Zen Center (SFZC) shortly before Suzuki's death in 1971.

Thomas Cleary's, Timeless Spring, is a superb collection of translations from the essential texts of Soto Zen. The Soto Zen teachings offered in these pages combine the eloquence of gifted speech and the force unlearned authority

Soto Zen has sometimes been called "the other Zen" because it was Rinzai Zen that first came to the attention of the West. The present anthology, then, is important not only in its own right, but doubly so because it provides an introduction to this lesser known but exceedingly vital branch of Zen Buddhism.

A timeless spring is the lineage of Zen masters whose lives unite history into a single moment. In the transmission of Zen, the lineage resides in each person. Now it is possible to meet these masters personally, through their lectures and stories, biographies and informal talks, poems, anecdotes, and witty conversations. Together these works demonstrate the linking, the continuous immediacy, of this school of the enlightened mind.

"Dr. Cleary has exposed the embers, please fan them yourselves." from the Foreword by Zentatsu Baker, Abbot, San Francisco Zen Center

Beautiful, wonderful, tremendous. If you didn't love real Zen before, you might NOW!
Cleary as usual seems accurate, "inside", and highly conscientious. The man has worked tirelessly for the
universal benefit his whole amazing career. Thank you!!!

Without getting too wordy, I can not say enough about this book.
What ever level you are at or think you are at, this book is for You. Many similar books dealing with Dogen, his teachings, his influences and those he has influenced in various lineages have been written... new is not always better.
Cleary does a beyond excellent service to all who are looking at this School. History, Teachings, non teachings...the full 360 is here. Starting on page 112; has the most concise instructions on Zazen, what it means, what it does not... how to do it etc et al... that alone is worth the price.
Materially.. this book has to be the best produced I have ever come across. Super thick pages... in a nice beige to amber hue. Font and typeset are perfect. Really if you are going to buy just one Zen book, or one last... this is it. One of my desert island musts.!
I will clean this up asap.. but I would grab at least one of these, the original 1980 edition... not certain if there are others. I am certain there are not many printed, and readers like me will not let ours' go for anything. No Hype. I am certain many in the New Age of Zen, Advaita, and Non Duality as a whole.. book sales and lecture circuit have seen this... with that... IMHO... you can forget them all. Really a Treasure imho. Not sure why this is not marked as Verified Amazon Purchase, when I got it from a Seller here.

Thomas Cleary's, Timeless Spring, is a superb collection of translations from the essential texts of Soto Zen. The Soto Zen teachings offered in these pages combine the eloquence of gifted speech and the force unlearned authority.

The records of the Soto masters forego any pretense to watered down guidance and deliver their message of Zen message in profound, unmediated terms from the very cliff edge of the limitations of language. Thomas Cleary's translations here, like all his translations, are exceptional.

Without sacrificing either the letter or the spirit, Mr. Cleary makes the records of these seminal Zen masters accessible to English readers with all the clarity and force of the original. Demonstrating his usual high standard of scholarship, Thomas Cleary's provides an in-depth introduction and extensive notes for each section.
