While I don’t really think of Spenser novels as formulaic, there are some plot elements that recur with a great amount of regularity. Some of these elements are the strength of the novel, like Spenser learning about a new area or business in which the crime he is investigating has occurred. Others are important parts of most Spenser stories—bad guys warning him off and Spenser refusing to be warned. Walking Shadows has both of these elements as Spenser runs afoul of a tong. Unfortunately, it also has another woman with issues fall for Spenser and become angry that he is in a committed relationship with Susan. I’m not sure how many times this has happened, but it feels like a regular event. You’ll figure out the who committed the crime and why very early on in this story, but the side elements that occur as Spenser fills in the details keep the book interesting despite this.

When Spenser and the ever-delightful Susan Silverman attend the local presentation of an esoteric play in the small coastal town of Port City, the last thing they expect to witness is a murder. But murder it is and to stretch the shock factor even further, the said murder happens on stage in front of a full house. Robert B Parker was always a cool hand at coming up with original plots and suspense-building events and this book is no exception. The local constabulary, for once, welcomes Spenser's unofficial assistance, as neither party has any idea who the killer is. Nor do they know why. A seemingly forgotten complaint of stalking of the local drama society's chief bureaucrat, which opened the tale, has seemingly fizzled down to a state of near irrelevance but with the world class writing skills of Mr Parker on show, the reader would be a fool to make that assumption.

WALKING SHADOW is classic Spenser. Indeed, the tale reads like a world class thriller until it settles down and finds its groove as an example of the classic genre-defining murder mystery series created by Mr Parker back in the 1970's.

The baddies start to appear as you approach the century page mark of the book and they really are outstanding and easy to dislike. Characterisation in the series is always a strong point, and 25 books in, if you aren't emotionally attached to the good guys by now, you never will be. Even reading of the innocent joy and happiness displayed by Pearl the Wonder Dog around Susan is enough to generate moisture around your eyes.

Yet another highly entertaining and essential purchase from Robert B Parker.

As a footnote to this review, I would like to say that some of the books in the Spenser series evolve from being simply great crime novels into outstanding works of literature. Some books are required reading due to their strong (and still relevant) social conscience. SCHOOL DAYS is still stuck in my memory, months after I finished reading it. WALKING SHADOW has - even today - relevant social connotations as well, but is significant mainly due to the incredibly high quality of the prose and story telling found within its covers. Some of the phraseology is Hemingwayesque in quality and when the reader comes across these sections, they really do change the tone of the book.

And of course the ending was not entirely unexpected (to me) but unless you are completely on top of this one, it will come as a cascading series of shocks and surprises that will leave the reader with tears in their eyes and completely covered in goosebumps.

WALKING SHADOW is that good. It is simply one of the all time great detective novels.

This is one of those tough books where it seems there are more bad guys than good guys, and in this book too many bad guys want to kill Spenser. Sarah Silverman leads him to Port City where she is on the board of a local theater group. Unfortunately an actor is shot and dies in mid performance and Spenser jumps into an investigation to find the murderer, an investigation that takes Spenser into the Chinese community and an almost immediate death thread from the local tong. Hawk, Vinnie, and Spenser make a tough team. One of those books you just can't put down.

I enjoyed this book because I love the characters in the the Spencer series and I laugh out loud at his dry wit. Although much of the plot was predictable, I didn't guess the outcome. A great vacation read or perfect for bedtime.

Typical Spencer. Great fast moving action, interesting characters and a complex story with many complex possible solutions. I love Parker.
Steep
My only regret comes from the fact that finishing "Walking Shadow" puts me one book closer to the end of the late Robert B. Parker' s amazing body of work. As always, Parker develops his characters magnificently and blends humor, honor, and the requisite bending the rules just enough so that they don't break but enough to get the job done. Add incredible writing to the mix and you have another great read by Robert Parker.

RBP’s books are treasures to read, shelve, and read again. Always a well thought plot along with knife-edge humor . Spenser, Hawk, Susan, and Pearl always deliver! Walking Shadow delivers no less!
Robert B. Parker delivers a Spenser masterpiece again. The detective from TV a few years ago does it again. You laugh, you learn about people and sassy talk again. What is not to love. I had read this before but will always read another Parker book over and over.
