In 1980, Ben and Jean Williams purchased property to build a home in the Newport subdivision of Houston. Soon after work completed, they moved in. Odd things began to happen almost immediately. Does this story sound familiar? It should. While you may not have seen Grave Secrets or read The Black Hope Horror, I’m willing to bet you’ve watched the Spielberg/Hooper collaboration Poltergeist. This book reads like a step-by-step blueprint for one of the most successful films of the 1980s. 2 The Haunted: The True Story Of One Family’s Nightmare Robert Curran. This one left me rattled.

I remember when I saw this story on Unsolved Mysteries and always wanted to know more. This book is told by the people who lived their and the horror that they went through while living there, if this is true it is awfull. Basic plot is that a family moves into their dream home only to be tormented by spirits of the dead, whose new home was built on a graveyard. The neighbors all plagued by horror come together reluctantly and begin a fight against the paranormal and expensive legal battles. I would not doubt that this is the inspiration for the movie Poltergeist. It is an easy read but a little difficult to keep track of the people so maybe keep an index card as a bookmark and write down who is who.
great ant
This book is very good and will give you the creeps!

I do believe this story to be true.

I saw the movie on tv and patty Duke did a great job playing Jean Williams. This is a story about houses built over a graveyard but the people that bought these houses did not know it at the time.

A lot of very scary things happen to them.

I read this book over the weekend and could not put it down.

anyone that wants to read a true ghost story this is it.

A very good read.the movie is called Grave Secrets and it is very good also!

Great Book on the Black Hope Cemetery Haunting and part of the inspiration for the movie Poltergeist

perhaps this was the inspiration for the movie "poltergeist". What would you do if you thought your home was built over an old cemetery? Ben & Jean Williams tell you what happened to them. Truly frightening but also sad, because they lost so much.

such a good creepy book! loved that it takes place outside of the city I live. Like forreal can ghosts give you cancer?

Being from Houston, I'm very familiar with this story. It's been featured on Unsolved Mysteries, etc. I was surprised that many television reports about the Newport hauntings are inaccurate. This book was well written, aside from a few spelling errors here and there. This book was not scary, in my opinion. I've been out to Newport and know of several people who have either lived there are or still do, so I can vouch for it being a strange place. This book is proof that real evil exists and that it can cause devastating things to occur.

My grandson lives near the area where this happened. he says the neighbors still talk about it and the strange things that happened to the people in th book!
Growing up in Southeast Texas, near where this story takes place, we always heard about the haunting in Crosby. Local legend has it that this was the inspiration for "Poltergeist" but we brushed that rumor off as pure fiction. After reading this book I can absolutely see where those stories originated! The book reads more like a documentary, as the characters are a little bit cardboard-like, and the narrator feels far removed from the story. I didn't get any chills or feel any fright--but I did keep mentally screaming for the Williams family and their neighbors to vacate the premises immediately. What are you waiting for?!?!

It's a true story, so keep a light on while you're reading this one.
