Contemporary Romance

Or so Tristan Sharpe believed. Now he would repay Larissa for once having made a fool of him. He had never understood that she had broken their engagement out of fear--that her youth and inexperience had not prepared her to deal with his autocratic ways.

He didn't know that Larissa had never ceased to love him, and that she was determined to beat him at his own game. But could she ever destroy the wall around his heart? Or would her own heart break for trying?
Early Waffle
This is a fairly routine, Harlequin-Presents-style romance novel. The basic plot is as follows: The 18 year old heroine goes to work for the hero, the chairman of his own company. Despite his reserve and their mutual reluctance to form a serious relationship, she ends up becoming engaged to him. When he doesn't soften toward her, and actually begins to provoke fear in her with his controlling, domineering attitude, the heroine breaks off the engagement in a very messy way (he thinks she's slept with an old friend). They meet again, 5 years later, and the hero begins to, basically, stalk the heroine into another try at their aborted relationship.

Plus marks for the New Zealand setting, which is well described, and the fact that I liked the heroine about 60% of the time. She was quick thinking, bright and could take charge when she needed to, although not quite often enough, during her dealings with the hero.

What really deviates from the routine Harlequin formula (and I don't think the author intended this) is the hero's menacing, frequently brutal behavior toward the heroine. (This isn't just an alpha-male hero -- he's scary.) He completely deserved any pain he received at the heroine's hands (which really isn't all that much). The author's ascribing or explaining away the hero's horrible attitude to the heroine and women in general, as being due to his controlling, love-withholding mother and an absent father, simply does not work. This guy needed some serious therapy.

It's still (despite everything I disliked about it) a readable book. The story has enough weird fascination (somehow) to keep a person reading. I think I was always hoping the heroine would be able to work some romance novel magic on the grim & nasty hero, or at least, that he might be softened up. Unfortunately, the hero's continued scary behavior toward the heroine, even after their reunion, made me conclude that she was putting herself in danger with this borderline psycho case, and thus, the quickly-arrived-at heartwarming ending does not ring true or make a great deal of sense, given what's gone on previously. He punches the wall by the heroine's head and he cries. Then he finally admits he needs her love and that he loves her. And this was all she needed to hear. (!!?)

2 stars for a well described setting, and a heroine who did stand up for herself --if not as strongly as I would have liked-- at least for a brief time.
this is the first book i've ever read of laurey bright. it was such a beautiful read and i was just mesmerized by the characters from page 1. contrast to the review above, i felt that unlike other romance novels, the hero is actually more likeable because he's very vulnerable in spite of his tough exterior. the heroine could read him like a book and thus understood and loved him still in spite of his icy attitude. i've read so many other romance novels since but this book, written in 1983 (i think) still is one of my most beloved possessions. a must-read!!
